Not all fats are unhealthy. For instance, fish oils have many health benefits. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish oils and are referred to as DHA and EPA. Studies suggest they help lower the nations number one killer which is heart disease. They may also decrease the symptoms of depression, dementia, cancer, and arthritis. Since our bodies can’t produce omega-3’s , we need to get them from the foods we eat. Good sources include: mackerel, trout, herring, salmon, tuna, and anchioves. Another form of Omega-3’s is known as ALA. It is found in vegetable oils, flaxseeds, walnuts, and dark green leafy vegetables. Fish is considered to be the best source of Omega-3 fatty acids. The American Heart Association recommends at least 2 servings of fish per week. Not a fan of eating fish? Taking a fish oil supplement is an option.
